Build the Virginian - A 4 x 8 with more

Where dig the Virginian Engine come from?

Where did the Rogers Bldg come from? Is it available or was it scracth built

We saw this layout on a tour of Kalmbach Publishing back this past summer. A great little layout makes one think smaller is better, also great video on the layout. Patiently waiting for the remaining issues.
Would like to thank you again for your hospitality, and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Terrific layout and series, count me as a new subscriber!

Great series I am following it and will be building it also its like a blast from my childhood watching the old Steams hauling the long black trains full of coal on down to the Norfolk docks FYI I think they still run some short tourist trains in the summer time But can’t swear to it now.

Glad to see 4x8s on the way back as many of us started with even less. I’ll be posting the latest photos of my 16ft with reversing loops at either end, a stretched 4x8 ?

I am going to build this layout. I have had larger layouts but looking for a layout that will be managable and challenging to build that will fit in a space I have. I am also going to do more electronics with the dcc and computer stuff. I only wish model railroader would post here on the page for their subscribers the track needed and the cutout for the plywood so I could get it cut before the dead of winter sets in and my shop gets cold. Should be a fun build.

Great video and article, but it said that passenger service ended on the Virginian in 1951, which is incorrect. Passenger service to points west of Roanoke ended in 1954, and service between Roanoke and Norfolk ended on 1/29/1956.
I will start construction after Christmas on my own expandable 4 X 12 Virginian 2-module layout set in the 1954-56 time frame and will run passenger trains as well as freights and coal drags.

I am planning to do this with my son-in-las and 3 grandsons. I would like to have a list of the various pieces of track, since i think the benchwork will come together pretty quickly and we want to start on the road work. If someone has the track specifications I would appreciate the listing, also some guidelines for working with the build up for the scenery.
jescpa@comcast.net Thanks!

Love the new project layout! Hungry for more information about it. Can’t wait till the whole series in print so I can get my hands on it. I’m really looking forward to the next part in the series which is going to talk about the benchwork. One thought that cross my armchair planning mind was extending a second loop by adding a second extention and benchwork connecting the two together.

I’m also happy to see Model Railroader has gone digital and I can read it on my Nook!

How can you turn the whole around?

David can we get a working drawing of the 4X8 layout like the one ou show in the video. The track plan that you have posted is not much help in laying track. Thanks great series,

i can not play the video’s on your web sight? What do I need to do?

I would like to echo Dennis Rao’s request. I am planning to build this as my first layout and would be more than happy to purchase a full size working drawing for the benchwork top and for track laying. Any chance you can offer that to interested readers? Keep up the great series!

How do you get a track plan with the correct radi for the curves? As a started in railroading, i need more details.

I’m curious about the results of cutting down the atlas turnouts.
Doesn’t that create some mighty tight turns for the little trains?
What I mean, is don’t the cars bind a bit? I have a layout that used the MRR Beer line layout design. I added a small yard at one end and stacked some turnouts, without cutting them down and it still seems like occasionally I’ll get some binding (and derailing) with even small 40 foot boxcars. Just wondering.
Love your videos and wish it was warmer in my garage so I could work through the winter. Trapped in the living room building structures (not so bad, really).
Cheers

How about a track plan showing the center points for drawing the radii?

Where can I get the propane trucks like the 3 pictured on Page 43, Picture # 2? Great article Jeff Martin. Thanks!

How about making the video’s of this project aviable on a video disk?

i’ve just started to build this layout, with a few modifications. like building it in N gauge, with a twice around loop.
