I have Challenger Imports, Ltd. NP Heavyweight Dining Car #1692 (link http://www.brasstrains.com/Classic/Product/Detail/051904/HO-Brass-Model-Train-CIL-2410-1-Challenger-NP-Pullman-Green-Dining-Car-1692w--Interior-Lighting ).
I was supposed that the builder of this car was The Pullman Company. To my surprise I have not found any information about NP dining car #1692 in Pullman Passenger Car Catalog (Kratville Publications, 1968) and NP Color Guide to Freight & Passenger Equipment (Morning Sun Books Inc., 1995).
Who was the builder of NP Heavyweight Dining Car #1692?
Is it correct #1692 for NP Heavyweight Dining Car?
It is Pullman-built. There’s a good possibility that the car you have matches it. I wasn’t able to find any photos of 1692 other than rather old ones of cars that may be in the same class. It’s possible that Challenger has pics from a private collection, plus other data, that supports the fact that it’s a Pullman. They aren’t perfect at CIL, but they usually get things pretty accurate. My guess is that it’s a Pullman.
Is there anything about the car that makes you think it’s not a Pullman?
Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any books that list all the passenger cars built by Pullman. It would be a pretty long book.
Pullman for many years built, owned, and operated sleeping cars (and other cars too) in the U.S. Their cars were generally dark “Pullman” green and had “PULLMAN” on the letterboards. After WW2, the operating part of the business was sold off to a combination of US railroads, and Pullman kept just the car manufacturing part of the business, Pullman-Standard.
