Building a Coastal Railroad - July 2012 MRR

We have have a celebrity among us.

In the July 2012 issue of MRR magazine, one of the featured layouts is New England & North Coast RR, a 12’ x 14’ layout set in th mid-1950s to mid-1960s. Sam Novello (aka Ollevon) is the creator and operator of this layout.

Take a look at this layout and the accompanying article which begins on page 31 of the current issue of MRR magazine.

Congrats to Sam for his wonderful and atmospheric layout!

hi gentlemen,

a wonderful layout indeed, though i’ve some questions.

The harbour itself is not served by the railroad, or is the track just passing along is not meant as a mainline?

For a professional fisherman the scene on picture 1 must raise an eyebrow. The rock almost blocking the spot where small craft can be dropped into the river; and dangerously close to the fisher boat Lily too. With uncles who were captain on ocean-going and river-plying boats I learned how difficult ships were to navigate.

This seems like a bit of nitpicking on a Sam Novello’s great looking layout. I can only dream doing the job as well as Sam has done.

nitpicking Paul

Hi Paul,

The small craft boat ramp, as most of them are, are almost always used at high tide. There for, the rocks will be well under water and will post no danger for anyone to launch their small craft into the harbor. The scene in question is modeled at low tide. The Lilly is there only a short time, waiting to be hauled up to the Gloucester Marine Railways (dry dock) Hope this clears that up for you, and thank you for looking.

Sam

Hi Sam,

my first thought was of course, those rocks unvisible at high tide are even more dangerous. Though on maps or by buoy’s all those spots are often very well indicated…don’t use maps dating years back, how would I know? Gladly enough it was just a small sailing boat (24 ft), the keel however was a wee bit damaged due to an under-water sand-dune.

In Holland we do not have a rocky coast, nor natural boulders, but i can imagine the dangers in “natural” harbours or shallow waters in those area’s.

I really like your layout, wish you great fun operating on it. Often when a layout is covered in MR, the owner is already planning a new one. How about your plans? I always read “what the owner would do differently” with great interest. Learning and awing at the very same time

I enjoyed the article since I am building a harbor scene on my layout. I notice that he has the same problem I have with water scenes; trying to put too much detail in a small space, it is just addictive! Great layout and great atmosphere.

My apologies for coming late to the party. The latest Windows IE version is giving me fits, lol.

Not only is Sam an excellent modeler, he’s a very nice guy.

Congrats to my friend Sam for the public acknowledgement of his surpurb talents!
