Any good videos/dvds, web sites or articles (withpicts) on the building ,from the ground up, of a locomotive? EMD/GE/ALCO , whatever. Would like to see how everything (wheels , prime mover , platforms , trucks , motors , wiring, frame, body) is manufactured, brought together and assembled and tested. The old Pacific Rail News had some good photographic diagrams of a Dash9 but would like to know more to see how it’s done . Thanks.
Trains devoted a magazine to the EMD LaGrage facility many years ago. I would think late 60’s or 70’s that covers it pretty well. In many ways they are no different from big cars with much brought in from outside sources and assembly only takes place. I often see trucks carrying wheels sets around CHicago and even EMD hoods probably being transfered to London Ontario
Wasn’t there an article on GE’s Erie plant not too long ago in Trains covering loco construction and testing?
I used to see entire EMD hoods being shipped down to LaGrange from Super Steel in Milwaukee (traveling down the highway), lately I have been seeing only the radiator section…
