the layout is 4 feet long by 3 feet wide with a 2 foot by 1 foot opening in the middle. at 18 inchs wide is where it will come apart and i have 4, 2 feet by 1 foot sections that i will put in the openings. is one foot wide ok for scenery, building, and roads? this model railroad will be taken to model train shows.
Why don´t you provide us with a drawing of what you intend to do. A picture always tells more than a thousand words …
Depending on what you have planned, 1 foot is plenty of space for scenery in N Scale. Look at oNetrak specs. Many of those modules are 1 foot deep.

hi,
i might be wrong, but on a modular layout all sections have the same size or at least the ends are the very same, so you can combine any two modules. I think you have a sectional layout.

Modular and sectional are semantics. Onetrak and FremoN can have different dimensions because the layout design is free form. The point of my post was to show what can be done with one foot of depth in N scale. There’s also TTrak. Those are only 8 3/4 inches deep.

I see no problem with your plan. I am assuming that there is a reason that you are making such small sections, vehicle size, storage space, etc. Track joints between sections are the biggest problem I have seen with sectionals, larger sections, fewer joints.
Two things which come to mind.
First, are you planning a backdrop around the inside to block the view across the layout. A simple set of 4 sheets of masonite that could be screwed or clamped to the inside would do. Height would depend on the height above the floor you are setting the layout at.
Second is more for future thoughts. If you may want to expand later, plan your scenes so that you could add a new section on each side without disturbing a scene.
Just a couple of thoughts.
Have fun,
it is going to have a backdrop and the back drop is going to be a 12 inchs high.
What are you going to do with that 1’ X 2’ hole? Even Twiggy couldn’t fit in a hole that size!
when i am running the model at home i will run it with me standing on the outside of the layout and when i take it to a model train show i will put the other sections in i will stand on the inside of the layout.
