]Sir: My husband is looking for plans to build the Nomad car which is at the Durango Silverton station. Was wondering if you could direct me in some direction on this - he wants this for Christmas. Thanks Jamestrains wife-Suzanne Close.

I am not really familiar with this car, or what it is for, but have a few general suggestions that might help… These are things that I have found useful when searching for prototype information

  • Try a web search with Google, and Google images.
  • Another good source for images is http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/
  • Go to “the source” where you first saw it - in your case, the Durango Silverton station (if possible - I don’t know where this is, or if it still exists)
  • Try the “Index of Magazines” link at the top of this page - it will let you search the table of contents of most of the magazines published by Kalmbach over the last 70 years or so. The back issues, especially pre-1990s had many many drawings that are a good start for building.
  • Try pther sources, like historical societies, or the railroad themselves (if possible), the builder of the car (also if possible), and so on…

Suzanne:

The data on the Nomad states it is a 50’ business car. From the side view of the car it seems easy enough to size the photo with a modern copy machine inorder to get a set of sideview dimensions to work from. Alternately you could get one of the LaBelle ( www.labellemodels.com ) coaches from the period to ‘kit bash’ into the Nomad. If your husband wants to work from the drawings to scratchbuild the car I’d think you might want to give him a set of sized photocopies and perhaps a LaBelle kit as a start. Trucks and couplers should be easy enough to get from any of several suppliers…Kadee most likely.

Sounds like an interesting project. Keep us all informed on how it goes.
