building question

hello all i have question on buildings. i have bought new and used buildings on ebay. the ones i buy already build on ebay come painted black inside my question is why ? and should i do this to the ones i’m putting together ???

They’re painted black inside to block light from ‘glowing’ through. That is, put a light inside a building and shows through on the outside by making the walls glow. Painting the interior walls black helps prevent this.

This is so that if you put a light inside the building it only shines out through the windows and open doors.

Many kits have very thin walls and will let some light shine through. Plastics which are usually translucent can be especially problematic.

The interior painting is to reduce the amount of light that can pass through the walls of the building.

Model structure walls, whether wood or plastic, are often so thin that some level of light passes through. Light coming through windows on one side of a structure can sometimes be seen through the wall on the opposite side of the building. This can become especially problematic if one decides to install lighting inside of the structure. Instead of just having light flowing out of the windows, entire sections of wall can sort of “glow” in the dark when the interior lights are on. Additionally, darkening the interior surfaces of the walls makes the whole interior appear darker, so when one gazes through a window one is less likely to notice the un-prototypical absence of an interior.

Its not a bad thing to get into the habit of doing when assembling a building kit. Always be sure to test your specific type of interior paint on the wall material to make sure that the paint solvent doesn’t attack (“craze”) the surface and potentially warp the wall.

thanks jeffrey

so its best to paint them all black or can i paint them another color

thanks guys [Y][:)]

I’ve found black to be the best I could use. Another color can allow the light to shine through as that color.

Hi

The inside is painted black to prevent light showing through the walls when building kitsI spray paint the inside of the walls black.

Once the walls and roof panels are dry I turn them over and spray paint them the base color on the visable side

I pre paint as much of the kit as possable as the walls are glued together they are set aside to set.

Once set the inside of the joint is then brush painted black the out side the wall colour after the black has dried as the black sometimes bleeds through the joint.

The combination of the black inside and painted outside keeps the light where you want it and plastic kits look much better when painted.

I some times black out windows from the inside after fitting the curtains as well not all the lights in a house are on at the same time

Hope this helps

regards John

If you’re going to spray paint the insides of buildings, get some masking tape or blue painters’ tape and mask off the strips on the edges where the walls will be glued together. If you get paint there, the glue will bond to the paint, not the the walls, and your glue joints will be very weak.

I put interiors in most of my buildings, so I generally print wall patterns on card stock paper and glue that to the inside walls instead of painting. I find that to be a more effective light block than paint alone.

Black or dark charcoal gray work the best. The darker the color of the walls; the more light that is absorbed by the walls; the more light that then comes through the window openings. As others have said, you are trying to eliminate light leakage through the walls.

thanks guys all done [:D]

If you’re going to light the buildings, and never add interiors, spraying the insides with black will work fine. Pretty much any color paint will work however.

I generally paint both inside and out with primer gray (before assembling the buildings), then spray a different color on the outside if it’s a wood building, or use an art marker to color the bricks if it’s a brick building. This way the outside and inside are a different color. Except for niece when she was a teenager, few people paint their interior rooms black.
