I have read many articles in MR magazines and other publications about using “BUMPY CHENILLE” for making trees and other forms of scenery.
All of the articles refer to it as apparently being readily available at most craft shops, or shops that sell clothing materials , etc.
Well I live near Ft Wayne Indiana, and I have searched the craft and materials store up one side and down the other.
The answer thay give me":What’s bumpy chenille?, And or "Never heard of it, have never seen any, where did you hear about it?
I took one of my MR books in and showed 3 different shop managers , and they said, well that’s a very interesting use of the material, but we have never seen any of it or heard of it before.
Believe me I have contacted EVERY known craft shop and material supply store in this area, and it’s about as available as finding "snipes " on the beach after dark!
Does anyone know where it’s readily available?
So where is this “mysterious shop” that sells this “rare commodity?”
Sorry to say but I think you are out of luck. My wife wanted some for a xmas project a few years ago. We looked every where but had no luck. We where told that it is no longer manufactured. Your only hope is to find a craft store that has some old stock.

You are probably right, I have come up empty handed so far.
The books I have are by Kalmbach and a couple others, both mention bumpy chenille, but then again, the books are several years old if not older.
Well thought I’d give it a try and see if anyone out there knew of any suppliers.
It could be your just lokking in the wrong department and the sales people don’t know what it is … AKA Pipe Cleaners . You can try again at the Craft stores if you like, or maybe just order online.

But what I am looking for is like pipe cleaners, but very “bushy” and can be tapered from top to bottom to resemble a tree.
I don’t have a picture available, maybe I can scan a page from one of the books that talks about it.
It looks like pipe cleaners, but can be up to 2 inches wide , and can be cut down to resemble fir trees, etc.

Time to pull the Broadway Limited out of Englewood because the New York Central “Century Limited” is rolling alongside into northwestern Indiana on paralell tracks.
Days of steam and thunder and heavy iron live again!
I got it at a variety store called “Ben Franklin”. I believer that they’re a tiny chain of stores so it’s unlikely that one is in your area.
Just do a google search on “bump chenille”. I had 57,500 hits with the first page, all for this product. It doesn’t seem that it’s no longer in production. Probably just esoteric and not a profit maker.
Likely the shipping will cost as much as the product, but at least you’ll be able to get it. Personally I think it is OK for tiny background trees especially when you need a lot of them, but not very realistic mid or fore ground.
