When did the Burlington Northern begin:
- Painting units with the Tiger Stripes?
- Begin painting units (especially SD40-2s) with the white face?
Thanks!

Anyone?
mid, early 90’s dont remember. but did love them
Tiger stripes came in the early 1980s, shortly after the Frisco merger. Might not be true, but the orange they used may have been Frisco orange. The experiment apparently wasn’t successful, since they moved to the whiteface scheme shortly after that.
I too liked the Tiger Stipes very much but was not so excited about the White Face scheme as it looked bad when dirty (which was most of the time). Never see any Tiger Stripe units any more, they must have all been repainted into White Faces.
Can anyone else confirm that the whiteface units were early 1990s? I bought a pair for my model railroad, which is set in the mid-1980’d, and want to know if these will become special “time warp” units or if they really existed then.
Thanks!
I have a mag at home with an article on BN paint scheemes. I can’t remember what mag / issue but I will check it out tonight. I get back with you tommarrow on this.
Thanks, and please write down the identifying issue of the mag. I will try to obtain it myself for future reference.
No prob. If I get a chance I’ll swing by home and find it today.
i believe the tiger stripes were only on the GP50’s BN bought new in the mid 80’s and on the 3 or 4 (reg. cab) SD60’s that were demo’ed around the same time.
OK, It’s CTC Board’s November 2004 issue. And farmer is right, the 53 GP50s bought in 85’ and 3 leased SD60s plus the original SD40-2 all had the tiger stripes.
Thank you!
hello! my name is oscar ,santiago de chile ¿ someone to speak spanich?
BN got the tiger stripe scheme in the mid 80’s on all the GP50’s but for one GP50 had a different scheme, instead of black and orange it had white and orange on the nose. The unit was 3110 and here is a picture of it . http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=44565 The SD60’s that BN had the 8300-8302 had the tiger stripes and one BN SD40-2 8002 had the tiger stripes. But I think BN might have had the tiger stripes even way before the GP50’s on the E-9s for the suburban trains in Chicago.
I am actually more interested in the SD40-2’s with the whiteface, and I want to model the mid-1980s and am worried that the Kato whiteface units won’t fit in… because they are a product of the 1990s.
Scoobster28,
If your modeling the BN in the mid-1980’s, then the White face scheme would be to modern for you. The first new units in this scheme were the SD60M’s #9200-9249 delivered in December 1989.
The “Tiger Stripe” (black and orange) scheme first showed up on the new GP50’s in June of 1985 and the leased SD60’s #8300-8302 in Nov 1985.

That is what I feared. Oh well, they shall be “time warp units.”
For a little additional info.
The first unit to be painted into the full white face scheme was SD40-2 #7826 sometime around Sept. 1989.
The first unit to be painted with the “Pinstripes” (the 2" white reflective tape seperating the black and green) was SD40-2 #7151 in May 1991.
