Burlington Trailways

Just saw an old ad for the above (1945) for bus service around the U.S. T he logo was very similar to the railroad, was this part of CB&Q ? I think the ad said “Burlington Route” I think there still is a “Trailways” company, is it still associated?

I doubt it is, if it is it would be owned by BNSF and BNSF has excited the passenger business

The trailways system was composed of groups of smaller bus transport companies.

I don’t know for sure but why not; after all there was a Santa Fe Airlines and I’ve got a picture of one of their -3s in an old issue of Invention and Technology Magazine. Burlington could very well have owned Trailways at one time although the only Trailways I remember was Continental Trailways.

Uncle Sambo put the kibosh to this practice of horizontal divergence in 1947 - they forced Armour & Company to divest themselves of their meat retailing operations at the same time. In 1932(?) the Justice Department had forced Boeing out of aviation operations and we got United Airlines out of the deal. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Pennsy associated with some aviation passenger company (Capital Airlines???) at one time?

Not quite true. The Trailways system was initally started by several railroads. ATSF-Santa Fe Trailways was a participating member as was the “Q”-Burlington Trailways. The Trailways system eventually became Continental Trailways which subsequently folded

I should have been more specific. I was referring to the period just before Continental Trailways. I’ve always been a big fan of the classy O-1 Eagle Coaches, which were a Europeon design (somewhere in or near Belgium). Here in Florida I drove for Gulf Coast Gray line about a decade. Enjoyable, sometimes hectic job. They were owned by Martz (of Martz Trailways).
