buying a steam locomotive

I am in charge of trying to buy a steam locomotive for a histocical society. does anyone know how i should go about it or know someone who has bought one? My email address is … WoburnTrainSearch@comcast.net

thanks all

The better way to buy one is to go to China market. A rebuilt 4-8-4 cost about U$ 60,000 , as I could know when a brazilian group here was trying to buy one there.

In south america you can buy steam engines too, but in not so good condition like we see in China.[:)]

Unless you have a very secure place to exhibit it, I’d go on to some other idea. Just off the top of my head, there have been two instances already this year in which locked buildings were broken into and historic equipment vandalized. Outdoors the situation would be that much worse.

pedrop, Thanks for the info. I will pass it along to the committee.

Have a good life.

thanks Dakguy201, I think what we will end up doing is having a replica made and it will be just a shell . It will look like a steam locomotive but will be safe to play on and will have nothing that someone can vandalize.

If all you want is a shell you may be able to find one that is displayed in a town park. There are a number of such engines that were donated in the past, but have fallen into disuse. They make a fine shell, but are missing so much that they could never run again.

the picture i sent you is not in running condition but just for display only it was already out of comissioned sometime in the early eighties. i just restored the back to its original state. willing to sell for the price of $10,000.00 And let know if you want a bigger steam train the Baldwin Steam train it’s been in running condition and has stopped operating when the factory( sugar mill )close down. but so far it is still in good conditon the control handle and gauge are still intact.
