Buying in New York

Hello!

A friend of me is going to New York. Where can he by SoundTraxx tsunami decoders, in central New York.

Regards from Sweden

Trainworld / Trainland has two locations in New York. Trainworld is at 751 McDonald Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, and Trainland is at 293 Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook, Long Island, New York. I’ve never been to either location and don’t know if they sell Tsunami decoders, but they seem to advertise practically everything else.

Hi Pelle

I have a friend in NY who has bought for me from Trainworld. There at 751 MacDonald Ave, Brooklyn and at 293 Sunrise Hwy, Lynbrook NY. Their website is www.trainworld.com

I usually buy on line from other places, but if you’ve a friend who is visiting then, hope this helps. Also, whenever I’m in the States I flip thru yellow pages.

Good luck… [8D]

By “central New York” do you mean the middle of the state of New York, like around Schenectady, or the middle of the city of New York? The city has a lot of public transportation and is easy to get around in, but upstate you pretty much need a car to get anywhere.

Pelle,

That was going to be my question, as well. NY is kind of an odd-shaped state so saying central can be interpretted differently. There’s a great shop, just west of Rochester, in Webster NY that has very good deals on DCC equipment and decoders:

Empire Northern Models

Tim Smith is the curator and a very good guy to work with.

I don’t think Tom at Empire Northern carries Soundtraxx. If your friend is going to be in one place for a few days, your best bet would be to order from Tony’s Train Exchange and have Tony UPS the order to where your friend will be staying. If he’s going to be staying at a hotel, call or email the hotel and tell them to expect and hold a package for your friend. If Tony has the items in stock, he’ll ship the same day or the next. UPS only takes 2 days, (actually it’ll probably make it in 1 day from Tony’s in Essex Junction, Vermont to central New York. I would contact Tony’s ahead of time so he can get the items if he doesn’t already have what you want in stock. You won’t have to pay state tax as you would be buying “out of state”. Tony’ Train Exchange is just about the best place to buy DCC anywhere in the US.

I live an hour north of Albany and I know the hobby stores in the Albany/Troy/Schenctady don’t have a very wide selection of DCC and what is available is mostly MRC and Digitrax.

Because of the way New York state is shaped, it depends on who you ask, if you’re from NYC then everything north of the city is upstate, if you live in the northcountry like I do then Albany is central, the Catskills & NYC are downstate and everytrhing else is the western part of the state, the frontier, (Syracuse, Rochester,Buffalo).

I love Trainworld, just got an order from them in the mail today! But I don’t think they carry decoders or such parts. They are a large volume seller of models, I assume they buy them by the pallet load. Of course I could be wrong, I’ve only seen their magazine ads and website.

Jay,

On the contrary, Tim DOES sell Soundtraxx:

Tim will be installing a DSX decoder in the B-unit of a Stewart FT A-B that I’m buying from him.

Hey Pelle -

Off-topic but for a second I thought you were THE Pelle (Soeborg), and I was gonna send you a PM with lots of questions about modeling techniques. But then I realized you are Pelle from Sweden and THE Pelle is from Denmark…Got my Scandinavian countries crossed this morning…Haha. Carry on…

Metro,

I initially was wonderin’ that, too. But then I thought to myself, “Pelle [Soeborg] has been over here enough. He probably would know someone to contact about that”.

Tom

Tom,

I think Pelle was talking about New York City.

regards

I think so as well. When I first moved to the USA I lived in Putnam County less than an hours drive from Manhattan. Family and friends would come and visit from the UK and other European countries and be stunned that NY was more than NY City. The rugged beauty of NY state is not what comes to mind for most across-the-pond when they talk about NY.

That’s true, as well, for some visitors from Europe and Asia who land in NY and think that a drive to the west coast is only a “few hours”.
