C&NW Class H Info

Does anyone know of any good sources for information, especially close up or high-resolution photos of the Class H or H-1 Northerns run on the North Western? I definitely (and somewhat unfortunately) don’t have the cash for brass, so I’m planning on doing a major kitbash of a plastic model over the summer, and looking for sources of info. Also, if anyone has any background with detailing and kitbashing North Western steam, references to articles or products would also be appreciated. Thanks!

The September and October 1995 issues of Mainline Modeler Magazine had drawings and pictures of these engines. You may be able to order back copies from Hundman Publishing yet or from one of the secondary magazine distributors.

Also, in 1975 or 76 TRAINS had a nice article about these impressive engines. At week end I could look into my library and get it exactly.

These CN&W 4-8-4s are among my favorites! Especially the rebuilt ones, classed H-1, with those distinctive disc drivers and the bell at 9 o’clock position and large mars light.

I have many photos of both prototypes and H0 brass models. If you are interested, please email me and I will send them to you.

BTW, although you said you definitely don’t have the money for a brass model I would rather recommend to save money a certain time because since these engines have very special and uncommon proportions it will be a challenge to convert a model of another prototype into the H. CUSTOM BRASS imported both versions. These are the cheapest models of these - but they are nice! Sometimes one can find one of these.
