C&NW-Wyoming 1890-1990

I saw this online and was wondering did the Chicago and Northwestern paint Dash 8 #8542 with the Wyoming Centennial logo like the photo here suggests?

This photo is from www.internettrains.com as the watermark suggests.

One word: Yes!

The Chicago & North Western Historical Society has a Diesel Roster book with photos of that Wyoming Centennial CNW DASH 8 Locomotive. It was shown in TRAINS or CTC Board when it was new.

This was on trainweb. It is not the same, but similar.

After the tour, we found the CNW 8577 East right outside the mine.

CNW 8577,a C-40-8, has a Wyoming Centennial Banner painted on it.

This is where to look for a real photo.

The 8577 was not another Wyoming Centennial unit- that had the “Safety and Reliability” logo on the long hood. She’s still running around as a UP patch- but the S&R logo has faded to a large white blob on the side.

The 8542 scheme pictured is actually the second yellow “Centennial” scheme she wore- originally she wore the Wyoming Centennial logo with Zito Yellow- but was repainted (as with the rest of the orginal order of C40-8s) into the “New Old Yellow” in 1991.

The Northwestern was also going to do a Dash 9 lettered to say something like “450 millionth ton of coal moved” or something to that effect. That didn’t happen because of the merger. Does anyone know what that may have looked like? I’d like to model that one.

I found the Safety & Reliablity CNW DASH 8 photo because of the faulty caption. What might have thrown the caption maker is that they are in the same style and placement.

Now we need to find a good photo of that one to have a matching set.
