I live in Frankfort Kentucky and plan to start modeling a moder shortline/regional railroad next summer/fall when i get myself a house. I want to model a freelance railroad somewhere in and around Kentucky. I also want to have a physical model of every engine it presently owns, meaning it cant be real big(no 60 or 70 engines.). I like the idea of modeling lines that were in real life abandoned, but im wondering if the C&O lexington subdivision could support shortline opperations. Could it make it off a few online industries and some bridge traffic or would it need to get track or trackage to louisville? Any help or info is appriciated.
First the Lexington sub was a roller coaster so,you may want to think about using 6 axle units.
Ok…I had thoughts about modeling this line as either the L&A(from the original Lexington & Ashland Ry) or the Kentucky Midland.Power was to be GP9s and SD9s.
My thoughts and feel free to borrow them if they suit your needs. All are freelance industries based on Eastern Kentucky.
1.Major industries would be in Lexington.
2.Winchester: 86 Lumber,Dade Scrap Steel,Big Burley-a tobacco warehouse-seasonal shipping.
3.Mt.Sterling: Sterling Pulpwood.Fairbank Feeds.
4.Morehead: Clack Mountain Lumber(outbound wood chips).Taylor Firebrick Inc.,Morehead Feeds.
5.Olive hill…Carter Lumber Universal Concrete Products(cement in)
6.Grayson: Buckingham MFG Urgerman Pulpwood.
7.Ashland General Warehousing,Collins Scrap Steel…
Not much industry between Lexington and Ashland.
Thanks for the info! I do plan to use 6 axle power as i already have an undecorated SD26. The Kentucky Midland is actually the name im thinking about using. That is a good amount of industries for some operation. Maybe could include some intermodel and piggyback between ashland and lexington/louisville. I also plan for the railroad to own whats left of the Frankfort & Cininati around Frankfort(with trackage right to lexington and maybe louisville if it helps get bridge traffic.
