at a recent trainshow i got a bunch of loc shells. 1 of them is a C&O chessie unit. it appears to be a GE of some type. road number is 1102.
i have looked on all the RR sites that i have including rr-fallenflags.org
with n o luck in seeing a prototype pic of this unit. i even lloked for the same number series also with no luck.
Sorry Tom, but without a photo it’s impossible to tell. Most likely the road number is bogus. You might want to get the The Contemporary Diesel Spotter’s Guide.
1102 doesn’t match the number on any real C&O/Chessie diesel I can recall, however 1102 is a number that Tyco put on an awful lot of their locomotives.
Based on your description, the Chessie and C&O lettering and the number, I’d bet that what you have there is a Tyco Alco 630 shell.
One of the giveaways that it’s a Tyco shell would be that it would have four rectangular holes on each side just above the walkway level. These were used to mount the truck assemblies- they had tabs that would snap into these holes from the inside.
While the C&O actually had Alco C630s, they only had the low-nose version (four of them, numbered 2100-2103), which they mainly used on their lines in Michigan. They spent their entire careers in the US in blue and yellow C&O paint- they were sold for use in Australia without ever having gotten Chessie paint. Neither the B&O nor the Western Maryland (the other two components of the Chessie System) had Alco C630s nor anything similar.
