Any one have any comments about the Governors statement regarding the subsidies for the RR? Looks like a no win situation. They cant afford to reopen the line and he wont give any help until they do reopen. I’m sure the economy there is taking a huge hit now with thr RR closed.
And does anyone know why Trains magazine refers to it as the CO&P when nearly everyone else refers to it by its actual reporting marks (CORP)? Reminds me of that old business of calling a BNSF Dash 9-44CW something else even though that ID was clearly labeled on the frame when they rolled out of the factory.
Help me out- What’s C O & P?
Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad, reporting marks CORP. Consists of the former Southern Pacific Siskiyou Line (Eugene, Oregon-Black Butte, Calif., 303 miles) and Coos Bay Branch (Eugene-Coos Bay-Coquille, Oregon, 136 miles), spun off in 1994. It’s now a RailAmerica property. It interchanges with UP at Black Butte and Eugene.
CORP embargoed the Coos Bay Branch beyond Vaughn, Oregon (railroad-east, geographic west of Eugene) September 21, 2007, due to conditions of several tunnels. It plans to cease through movement on the Siskiyou Line from Ashland-Black Butte this year, and reroute freight that previously moved geographic-south on this line north to Eugene. The only business on this segment is the Yreka Western Railroad at Montague, Calif., which generates very little traffic.
Most railroaders in the PNW refer to this railroad as “the Corp”.
