C & W Railroad?

Hey guys,

I was looking at a set of bridge plans for a bridge in Richmond VA and noticed that the railroad under the bridge was designated the ‘C & W Railroad.’ I have seen this once before at a bridge in Harrisonburg VA as well.

If you know what the ‘C & W Railroad’ stands for please let me know. Thanks - Ed

There was a Chesapeake Western, a short line operated by the N&W, that ran out of Harrisonburg, VA. Part of it is now operated by the Buckingham Branch Railroad. I can find no steam railroad with the initials “C&W” serving Richmond, going back to the Official Railway Guide reprint for June 1869. I suspect it should have been “C&O”.

Trains magazine reprint of Rand-McNally 1948 Railroad Atlas has a ’ CW 'railroad ( not C & W )in Harrisonburg,which is the Chesapeake Western. …connecting at H’burg with B&O / Southern, also connects with C & O at Staunton, and N & W at Elkton.Can’t find it at Richmond on map.
