C. 'Wick' Moorman speaks to the Chamber of Commerce on State of American Rails

Was watching C-span this morning and watched this speech given by the CEO of NS Corp. Mr. Charles “Wick” Moorman on the Rail Industry and some of the current pubic and political informational subjects.

Wide ranging and interesting, at least in my thought. The following link is to the C span Video @

After his speech (34.17) there are some questions from participants referencing the State of Topics of interest.

His answer to a question about high speed passenger rail, is sort of an obvious ( to the railfan community) answer, but revealing to many others.

And a question from the moderator about “public infrastructure and private rail” is interesting.

and this question was the last : “Move from Diesel as a fuel to Natural gas as a locomotive fuel.”

And This linked site is to a Press Release of 2-20-2014 on his speech:

FTA: “…NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ – Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman today said freight railroads are “essential to driving America’s continued economic recovery.”…”

Not a fly lands on him…pretty straightforward on most issues, clear on the natural gas as a locomotive fuel concept too.

I like the answer he gave to the question of HSR here…he pointed out that in most European countries, rail is a people mover, with freight as a secondary consideration, whereas here, freight is the dominant product moving by rail.

The person asking the question seemed to agree with him, although there was no other comment made about it.

Over all, a salient and well composed address.

For those who thought PTC was something railroads would welcome, I suggest you listen closely to what he says….a $1.00 return on every $20.00 spent strikes me as a bad investment too.
