After a year, do I need to clean the touch-pad, something like I do with my TV Remote ?[?]
Its possible that the keypad might be dirty, but have you checked your batteries lately?
Is your antenna all the way up, and your command base relatively unobstructed?
Keep in mind that each keystroke on the remote is sent through the air to the command base, and any weak signal or intreference with the frequency of that transmission will cause the command to be lost.
