I started my layout with dead frogs which worked ok for modern diesels. But my Bachmann 4-4-0’s stall almost every time. I plan all manual throws so my only option seems to be BluePoints or the Cab Industries 220S. I have used BluePoints before and liked them, but they would require me to tear up every turnout on my layout in order to drill the switch point rod hole. I have a 220S and think I can install it rather easily.
Trouble is it seems pretty fragile. Does anybody have any experience with them? Do they last? Do they work reliably? Any input is welcome. Thanks - Bill
The culprit is not the type of throw you employ, it is the poor pick-up properties of your Bachmann 4-4-0, that require attention.
I did work with throws from Caboose Industries and found them reliable when installed properly.
I installed a 220S this morning and it seems to be working fine. Points are aligned well and the frog now gets power. I ran the little 4-4-0 through it several times using both routes with no hesitation at all. It was a challenge to install and wire, but definitely easier than tearing up the turnout to install a BluePoint. Now I just have 18 more to go.
I don’t use 220S throws but I do use 202S (without contacts) throws. Great product, durable, reliable, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a complaint from another owner of these throws either. When I started building my layout I went to my local MRR club and asked what manual throws they recommended. Almost all of them said to use some kind of Caboose throw. I’ve had them on my layout for over a year and they still work just as good as they did when they where new.
Good Luck,
Jamie
