If you recently saw a caboose give location and railroad name. im curious to see how many of these cars are still in active service.
I will start I saw one near valleyforge last month in conrail colors.
Saw one a few weeks ago behind 2 UP switchers. Both in C&NW colors. Was in Janesville near what is called 5 points.
I didnt see the whole train, but what I did see consisted of box cars, empty gondolas, and loaded flatbed cars of lumber.
I saw a tansfer caboose, if that counts, at the WSOR yard recently. It was built by the GTW in the 70’s I think. It’s really neat and they use it once in a while to protect a shove on a 10 mile sub that, from what I understand, has no passing siding at the end so the train is just run backwards and the caboose is used to protect the shove.

Seen 2 recently, one bay widow CR coloured but maybe it was CSX stencaled in complete and functional looking form on a local freight in Buffalo. Also saw a glims of what appeared as a CR blue caboose with a red cupela in a long transfer from Niagra Falls, it was the head end car though.
Excuse me but now that I think about it that CR bay window caboose was lettered NYC !!
I’ve seen two CR cabooses lately, one in Alburtis, Pa on NS’s C&F Secondary and another on a local in Emmaus, Pa (Allentown) on the Reading Line.
Here are a couple I spotted within the last 6 weeks.
This ex BN caboose was on the tail of a tie distribution train.
This ex Soo was on the back end of a local. It almost looks like it’s in the gondola, but the trees are in the way.[swg]
Csx has a transfer caboose in defiance. and the last time matt and i were in Garrett In they had a pair of B&O chessie cabooses.Fostoria also had one in the C&O yard.
stay safe

CSX has an ex conrail bay windowed caboose recently stationed at the ay yard in Akron Ohio. Everytime I see it in the yard and never out on the line, and always behind trees obostructing a good photo.

I saw one sitting at NJT’s Port Morris Yard in Rockaway, NJ. As far as I know it is still there. It is NJTR #907.
Saw one at Roberts bank a few months ago on a MOW train. (BC Rail)
SRY still uses them all the time on their local freights, they’re blue with big bars on the windows and the “Rail Link” logo on the sides.
CSX has many in service here in GA. I can tell you where two are, and hopefully some other people can fill you in on the rest. Also, I’ll try to get some pics up tommorrow.
CSX 900424 operates almost daily on the local in Athens, GA. In fact I saw it used this afternoon in a long reversing movement. It used to be based in Winder, GA
CSX 900420 used to be the Athens caboose however it was replaced by the Winder caboose. I would like to know what happened to it. Their is no longer a caboose on the Winder local.
CSX 900423 Can be seen in a small yard just outside of Dobbins Air Force Base in Atlanta, GA. It is labeled “shoving platform.” However, I was told that its last use was in MoW. Se link: http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16325
Wow, I just realized that I have 420, 423, and 424. I wonder if anybody else can help fill in the remaining ones in this block, or help identifiy their origins!
I forgot one!
Conrail 18374 was on the back of a long train of mostly railbox boxcars in Erie, PA. It was a transfer caboose (N-9E) built 11-45.
Judging from the posts, their must be a buch up there. I remember seeing at least two other Conrails, however I was unable to get pics of them. I’ll do some scanning of what I have howerver!
Saw one this afternoon in BN colors near Fontana, CA. This was along the Metrolink San Bernardino route, former Santa Fe second district. Had a lot of graffiti on it.
I saw one the other day at the end of a local UP train that takes cars from the mailine north to the repair facility. It wa sof course UP colors but the only place you usually ever get to see a Caboose around here is in that park next to the Depot so it was a real treat to see one rolling on the rails.
