Cabooses is still being use by the CSX and NS in local and mine run duty where there is a long reverse move to be made.

Thanks everyone,
I thought they did but I wasn`t sure.

Canadian National and Canadian Pacific have a small collection (less than 100 each). CN uses them on local freight runs. Most of them seem to be used as accomodation on work trains or similar. I don’t think any are used on fast freights.

I suspect that they all do. You need them on any job that does much backing up, so they are likely on locals, especially those that work dead end trackage of some length. Work trains may also need a caboose, for same reason.

Csx has one in operation lifesaver paint here at our local g.m. plant. It is used when switching.I saw an orange one used in m of way service last year here in Defiance.

The UP uses former C&NW cabooses for local switching especially if a backup move is necessary. I think the CP does the same using former Soo Line cabooses
Friday I saw a Santa Fe caboose on a local in Joliet Illinois
