i was wondering if anybody has found a free cad program for degining there model railroa[?]d
it’s called XTrkCad… I use it. Just do a google search for it and there you go… it’s free and is now open source… just go tto the registration page after you download it to get the registration info.
I’ll second the XTrkCad program. I program and use AutoCAD for a living, but download the free model rr programs just to check them out and found XTrkCad to be easy to install and learn. It seems to do everything the free Atlas program does but is not limited to the Atlas product line.

any others i have checked a few sites and have not been able to download
atlas has one you can download… I can’t get it to install on my computer though… so I can’t say good or bad either way… those are the only truly free layout programs I have seen… there are several others out there that you can download the demo for but you can’t save your layout with the demo version.
What release of AutoCAD? Using auto arch 2000 also have R14 with softdesk 8. What needs to happen is to make a CD with all the blocks for RR. PS I use 3rd planet It is as close to AutoCADD and Microstation as I ahve seen, a good cross breed! I still have a set of Relese 9 and 10 discs.
George,
Release 9 of AutoCAD? Wow! When was that version released - late 80’s? I think I started learning AutoCAD on R11.
Tom
I learned CAD on release 9 in high school in the early and mid 90’s… then we upgraded to R 11 in 93 or 94
Anyone who learned AutoCAD prior to version 12 should either be canonized for their superhuman patience and perserverence or commited to an insane asylum…
I learned it on version 10 using a digitizer…almost smacked my coffee mug through the silly thing…
I learned on Version 1.5 or something like that. It was back in about 1987 or so. Used an IBM that had 2MB of ram with a 540 MB harddrive. Twin monitors and a digitizer tablet. A friend of mine started with Version 1.0. Boy have times changed. LOL

The autoCadd people who did there time from Release 9 can be easly spotted! THEY TALK TO THEMSELVES (I do it every day and sy the same thing “Ink on Mylar was better”. I am using 3rd planet then using the dwg export to Autoarch 2000 Autocad. It is neat to see everything in 3D then make your benchwork fit the 1st time.
Only one problem it is os easy to make cahnges that you never FINI***he design stage. I still am not happy with the yard (lack of) and the impossinle scenery that cad lets you create SO EASY.
Worst part it tracks how much it will cost to build!!!
OK WHERE IS THE SPELL CHECKER!!!
