Cadiz RR (Trains Nov 1981)

Gary Dolzall specified in his byline for the Cadiz RR in the Nov 1981 “Trains” issue that it discontinued its passenger service in 1941. In the Oct 1948 “Official Railway Guide” issue, where train schedules included for the railroads are normally for their passenger trains, I read the following:

“Effective March 1948. Train leaves Cadiz (Ky.) 7:00 am, arrives Gracey (10 miles) 7:30 am. Leaves Gracey 8:00 am, arrives Cadiz 8:30 am, daily except Sunday. Connection at Gracey with Illinois Central.”

Can anyone please tell what the trains were in that schedule?

Thanks, Denny Wozniczka

Probably second class trains…scheduled freight trains…it was a way of operating trains without having to issued train orders before track warrants or form D’s under today’s rules. It also was an advertising gimmick to show they operated trains I am sure… It may also have been a mixed train.

Denny,

There is a Cadiz RR group ( http://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/cadrr/conversations/messages ) that I belong to. Stan White, the last president of the Cadiz RR, and grandson of the founder, is a member. I do believe that the article indicating passenger service ending in 1941 is correct and that the subsequent schedule was for their daily freight run. I do remember a comment in an article that local farmers would hitch a ride in #11 (the caboose) occasionally.

I had an opportunity to walk the old right-of-way with Stan 6 or 7 years ago and he pointed out where the station, two engine houses and water tank were at the Cadiz station end.

BTW, they were the ONLY trains… Although I seem to remember that at one point there were two round trips. The railroad rarely had more than one loco operating at any time.
