Hello ,I have got a quick question . Is anyone here familiar with this train at Knotts berry farm? I looking at building a layout using this as a theme .Can someone reccomend some locos and rolling stock that look like this train ?
Thanks,Mark
Knotts Mine Ride, Huh? I can remember when that and the stagecoach were all that was there.
Well the closest you’ll get to the locos are LGB’s TOYTRAIN Porter’s, they 're the same loco’s. The loco’s at knott’s are based on small (2 -8ton?) Porter Industrial Locomotives and LGB’s Grizzly Flats gondola passenger cars are pretty close to the ore cars, but I would suggest using Hartland Minicar gondolas as you can modify them with doors and seats to get closer to prototype and thier a lot less expensive.
Question: How are you going to model the interior and be able to see it? Just going to leave the rear open? Just curious?
I am not sure how i’m gonna do it yet .I will probably only have a few short tunnels for the train to go through and keep most of the layout outside .It wont be an exact model of the ride.
Are you thinking indoor or outdoor. If its outdoors I would suggest keeping it real simple, maybe just a couple of loops one over the other going in and out of your hill. you could have exterior scenes on 2 or 3 sides. The Mine Ride and the Log Ride both are crammed with neat dynoramas that could be modeled outside. remember the log rides “interiors” are supposed to be exteriors.
If its indoors, well, the sky is the limit. well maybe. But you could build out the “interior” of the mine ride like a cutaway of the mountain on the backside of the layout, “hollowed out” of the mountain.
I take it you’re pretty regular visitor to Knotts, havent been there since the family sold it, kinda afraid nothing I remember will still be there. had that shock at Disneyland when 1960’s Tommarowland went poof!
Well my wife and I are in the process of buying a house . So i’m gonna have a yard to put the layout in . Currently we live in a condo and the trains are in boxes at the parents house .
I don’t plan on this layout being to extravagent .I dont have much experience with wiring of layouts so there wont be any reverse loops or anything like that .Is there any free-ware I can download that can help designing layouts ?
Thanks,mark
no free-be programs that I’m aware of. I cheated since i have Auto-cadd on my computer but I would suggest getting an LGB planning templet. it can be used to layout tack accuratly on graph paper. Best I can offer.
