They say to use N scale roadbed with 1/4 cork strip in the middle to make it look smaller like a branchline siding ,I see the cal road bed compony makes a branch line size roadbed made with a different material does anybody have experience with this product. California roadbed is homasote that has been milled to an exact thickness. I have a friend who used it on his last layout and was very happy with it. If you like homasote, the only drawback I can see is cost. Here is a link:
I used the branchline thickness Homabed and am very pleased with it. I spike my Walthers/Shinohara track, and it takes spikes very well (although you can nail or caulk the track if you prefer).
