Calling all Chicagoans

For all the people in Chicago land. What sould i take to work Metra or Amtrak?

I would say that depends where you’re coming from and going to. Chances are you’ll have to ride Metra where a station is served by both and go to Chicago. Southbound, Glenview is an Amtrak stop to discharge passengers only, and receive passengers holding connecting tickets via Chicago. Same applies at Naperville.

On the “Q”, in the old days you could ride between Aurora and Chicago with a local ticket on the Twin Zephyrs. I did that a number of times.

Generally speaking you will be much better off with Metra in terms of schedule frequency and on time record…sheer convenience…nuff said?

I definitely agree with the responses above. When Chicago’s downtown stations are served by both Amtrak and Metra over the same routes, then Amtrak won’t let us ride such a short distance. Along with Glenview and Naperville, I believe Homewood on the old IC-Electric has the same caveat.

And Metra is indeed very reliable. A suggestion: call the RTA’s toll-free number and ask about travel options. I believe that Metra still has a weekend pass. If that doesn’t fit, you can buy a 10-ride ticket in your “zone” (each zone is 5 miles long) and present that on any other line. And there are some great services: when the Ravinia Festival is in season, special trains stop right in the middle of the park! And the Naperville Metra Route has a stop adjacent to the back entrance to the Brookfield Zoo.

Happy training!

ok thanks guys
