For some strange reason I bought a RS-2 painted in Monon black and gold colors. I’d like to have a matching caboose. Does anyone know of a plastic kit/RTR style Monon caboose that is available. If I have to, I will paint one on my own. Which type of caboose did the Monon use?
I have checked some Monon sites, and the pictures look something like a NE style caboose with the cupola in the middle of the roof.
Checking the Fallen Flags site, you can either use the Atlas International cupola caboose (the NE-6 isn’t tall enough), or the Roundhouse wood caboose with scratchbuilt two-window sides. Neither will be exact, but they’ll be a whole lot cheaper than brass!
(I posted links to photos of the above cabooses on your question posted onto the Atlas forum)
I have a 1967 issue of RMC,and in it is a complete pictorial roster of the Monon railroad. The Monon had a total of 4 different cabooses. The first one is a steel center cupola caboose, while the next two had the cupolas at one end of the car.One is a wooden version, while the other is a steel riveted style caboose, and the fourth version was a transfer caboose. All were built in the Lafayette, Indiana shops. The number sequence for these cabooses was 81500-81560. The colors were red and silver for all of them except the transfer caboose, which was red with white lettering.
