Toyota is about to announce it will build Camrys at the long-underutilized Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana.
Can some of our Hoosier board members tell me what it will mean to rail traffic and rail lines up in that area? I know a lot of rail infrastructure was constructed when Subaru first built there, but has a lot of it been removed in the recent lean years?
I live in indianapolis, but the csx lines that run through lafayette are controlled in jacksonville. I honestly dont know if they will be serviced by rail.
csx and ns just finished a route around lafayette.trains did an article about it"battle for lafayette".surely one of the railroads would build a spur or they both could go to the plant like they have it at a steel mill in leipsic ohio.
stay safe

I’m pretty sure the Subaru- Isuzu plant is serviced by Norfolk Southern. I would think it would just mean more volume for NS. NS has been real good at getting these japanese plants located on its lines. They have Diamond Star Motors at Bloomington, IL, Toyota at Georgetown, KY, Toyota at Princeton, IN, Subaru-Isuzu at Lafayette.
In a related story, it looks like Toyota is looking into building a plant in the Greensburg/Batesville Indiana area. This would help bring traffic to the I&O(NYC) line through that area. This has not been confirmed as of yet. This “unknown company” is offering land owners 170% on the value of their land. They say it will bring 750 jobs to that area. This was reported in the Indianapolis Star April 25th.
