Can anyone tell me what model railroad this car came from?

Recently I was looking at pictures of the Cat Mountain and Santa Fe, and ran across a freight car froma model railroad that I’m unfamiliar with. It’s very cleverly designed. The car’s logo, reporting marks, information, etc. appear to be arranged like they are on this Grand Trunk Western Car shown here (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/61415954 ) including a very similar ‘noodle’ logo with ‘UT’ instead of ‘GT’ Since I am not aware of anything like this, I imagine that this is a freelanced road, possibly a fictional CN subsidiary.

I know its not a Utah Belt car, the logo is wrong. I found a picture of what I believe to be one of these cars in which the name is barely readable. It appears to be ‘Urban Terminal’ or something like that.

If you need more examples, there is one on Page 74 of MR from June 2007

Also in this video here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu9Qt1oGaMY

the cars appear at 0:22 (blue boxcar) 1:46 (blue covered hopper) 2:36 (brown boxcar) and 2:55 (another blue boxcar), but the cameraman is panning too fast to make out much more than the log.

Does ANYONE know whjat model railroad this car came off of, and if so, how I can learn more about it?

I looked at the video and you are right about the speed being too fast and blurred,to see it well,I was able to pause it after several attempt’s and was able too,but it is even more blurred then…Anyway there is a Prototype, which is,UT,Utah Railway Company,if that helps…50 ft,wide door…

Gidday, I could be leading you down the garden path but I see that the Union Terminal Railway Company (of St. Joseph Missouri), reporting mark UT, was absorbed into the Missouri Pacific in 1978. Cannot find any photographic proof to confirm if they owned any freight cars, let alone what colour scheme.

Cheers, the Bear.

I manage to stop the video on the boxcar-I play video games and:

That is a MDC Union Terminal boxcar that is extremely rare and fetches around $25-40.00.

Its a IPD era short line boxcar.

I’ll stick my neck out Bear,I believe, judging from the Video,There is a lot of Santa Fe and Denver & Rio Grande, equipment in the video and looking up UT. it does say it is Utah Railroad Company,Founded in 1912,still around today and according to the site map,it doesn’t go anywhere near Missouri…I Googled,Utah Railway Company and got a whole history of it…

Cheers,

Frank

Larry,

You must have a lot better eyes that I have, even wearing, glasses,I stopped, four times and it was too blurry,to make out,a lot, that whole video is poor quality, whoever made it and way too fast…[bow] If it is from, Missouri, what is it doing so far West?..Have Fun,Bye!![:-^]

Cheers,

Frank

that sounds reasonable, I was wondering if you, could explain yourself a little more. You used a lot of abbreviation. What’s MDC and IPD? Also, is Union Terminal freelanced? Is it supposedly a CN subsidiary?

A clearer image of the UT logo can be found on the cover of the Aug '89 model railroader. There are good images of the issue on Ebay, but I don’t know if the forum will let me link to ebay…

Larry is probably busy,so,MDC,Model Design Construction,IPD,Incentive Per Diem…

Cheers,

Frank

The car in question isn’t related to the prototype Utah Railway. They’re a coal hauler with hardly any of their own rolling stock, and certainly not boxcars or covered hoppers in interchange service.

The UT car on the cover of the August 1989 MR appears to be a Details West car, the same model that’s currently produced as Athearn RTR.

Frank: Isn’t MDC the initials for MODEL DIE CASTING?

Joe

MDC was Model Die Casting. They were formerly a producer of kits, but their product line is now part of Athearn.

I think the railroad belonged to one of Barrow’s friends who made up a paint scheme to look like Grand Trunk.

So what I’m hearing is that this mystery UT road isn’t a real famous model railroad that often graces the pages of MR?

Ok…MDC=Model Die Casting/Roundhouse products.

Frank already explained IPD…

The UT is/was a real switching railroad that received a cash flow boost by allowing IPD boxcar investors to use its name on their cars.

I’m sure that is a MDC car since I been looking for one for several years.

So if this mystery UT is a real road then why haven’t I seem a bunch of old blue boxcars with that wired CN style noodle logo on them? That’s why I’m thinking this articulate UT might be freelanced.

Union Transportation Co.

http://ctr.trains.com/Online%20Extras/Brochures-Graphics-Booklets/2012/01/Union%20Transportation%20Co,-d-,%20photos.aspx

The reason is simple…Athearn’s competitor MDC was turning out better looking IPD short line boxcars then Athearn’s blue box “Railbox” boxcar kits.Athearn’s BB kits was losing ground to MDC kits since they(MDC) had a better selection of car types then Athearn.

The one UT Dave linked to is one of three such “Union Terminal” railroads.

MDC may have made some cars with a similar paint scheme (I haven’t seen any so can’t opine), but the one on the cover of the August, 1989 is most definitely either a Details West car or model of the same prototype arrived at some other way (doubtful considering the door detail looks cast on and that was the only HO model of this door style in plastic until Atlas made one).

Here’s a copy of the cover image from Amazon.

That could be the car…MDC made so many IPD boxcars.

According to my incomplete list the car I’m looking for is a MDC FMC.

Of course I could have copied down the wrong manufacturer just as easily as not…Glad I didn’t bet the farm. [(-D]

Thanks for the information… [tup] I shall do some research…

Joe,

I also thought, that is what MDC stood for, until I stumbled on another,MDC,they also make many different Models, paints, tools etc…I never knew they existed, til today…I actually was waiting to see what someone was going to say…If you want Google it.and see if you ever heard of them before?

Cheers,[:D]
