Can I speed up a locomotive

I recently purchased a Ho scale Bachmann B23-7 and the speed of the locomotive is slow. I was hoping to couple it with a F7 but my F7 is twice as fast and maybe triple the speed. Is there any way to speed up a train?

DC? DCC? Sound? No sound? Need more info to answeer your question!! [%-)]

I am not familiar with these exact locomotives but I am guessing the short answer is no. I am also guessing that the Bachmann F7 is actually running way to fast rather than the other way around.

On the other hand, the long answer is that it might be possible to re-gear the B23-7 with higher gears and/or remotor with a higher RPM/volt motor in order to make it go faster.

Another way long answer to do this would be to convert to DCC and then speed curve the locomotives to have the same top speed and react in the same way to the throttle.

DC and No sound

T Z’s suggestion to convert to DCC is the only practical way - and you’ll come to LOVE DCC!![8D]

Slow the F7 down by regearing it or adding a resistor.

In general, you want slow speeds because they’re closer to scale that the racecar velocities some models can do. In fact, people pay extra for model locos that have a realistic speed range.

I’ve got two identical Bach B-23’s. One new and the other about 10 years old. The new one runs twice as fast as the older one.[%-)] Same gearing. The only difference is one has small flywheels and the other large.(don’t remember which is which??) Is the F unit a Bachmann? You might be able to purchase a new F unit motor and put it in the B-23. They should be the same size.(about $12 from Bach parts dept.)

You can add resistors to slow down the fast one, as mentioned in earlier posts that’s the most logical option. You may need to do some trial-and-error to get the F slowed down to the range of the GE unit. If your operations are going to involve a lot of multi-unit running you might want to go DCC.
