So me and my dad were at Proviso the other day, where I spotted this. Sorry about the bad pic, but it was cloudy and there was a slight drizzle, and I took this with my long lense through and open window of my dads Jeep.
I was at one time a SD45, it is now a SD40M-2. The V20 engine of a SD45 has been replaced with the V16 engine of a SD40, and the electrical system has been upgraded to near -2 modular standards.
Ohh, thank you very much. So if I wanted to try and make a model of this, all I would have to do is aqquire an SP SD45, and paint a UP patch on it… right?
I have modeled 3 SD45s. The Athern SD45s were unproportionaly wide and looked bad. So I bought shells that were correct and detailed them out (I think they were Rail Power shells). They turned out pretty good but for some reason I don’t remember they are all dummies now.
\Why would you want to patch it? SP’s SD40M-2s were in the 8574-8706 series, although not all were rebuilt from former SD45s. If you click on the SP locomotives link, and to a lesser extent the Nor-Cal Espee Connection link, you can find out more about these locomotives.
If memory serves me correctly, it was about 1994 that MK rebuilt these.
Since we’re playing “Identify the Locomotive”, I have one picture I took while at the Medina RR Museum, but it’s of the front end only. There’s no side picture. Sorry.
At the risk of getting chewed out for talking models on this thread…[#dots]
I model 1995 SP (although right now I don’t have a layout).
I have a good cross cut of what you might see on the SP right before the merger. I used to model contemporary but the merger screwed that up and I stopped modeling modern.
Mostof what I have is blue box, although I add quite a bit of detail. Typicaly I put numbers in the lighted numberboards, drill and add grab irons on the ladders and short hood. Then I add cab details, air conditioner proper horn, sun visors, rear view mirrors and winshield wipers. Then the snowplow and MU/ air hoses. I usually stick with the stock paint job and just paint the details, but I have painted and decaled some that started out as blank shells like my B39-8s,GP60s,C44-9s and SD70Ms because there were none available back then. I also re-bodied my 3 SD45s with proper width bodies.
