IMO Dave Frary is one of the best and I got a lot out of these DVD’s. My knowledge of scenery construction was very limited. These videos were what I needed to get stuck in and give it a try. I am very happy with them.
Yes, I agree Dave is one of the best to learn from. I just recently bought a mold from him and I got it very quickly.
Sorry I don’t have the DVD’s to give you a review. I do have an early edition of his book and I can say it’s very good and well worth the price.
I believe the VHS tapes are not compatible with tape players in Sweden. That’s a shame because they’re a heck of a lot cheaper.
this http://store.yahoo.net/kalmbachcatalog/12216.html is one of the classic books on model railroading scenery . having a video of dave frary illustrating his techniques… that’s even better than the book . definatly worth what they’re charging
Thanks for your answers guys, appreciated. I will soon be the owner of this DVD serie.
gsetter: You are right about the VHS tapes. So I will buy the DVD’s instead.
I love this forum, always good answers… [bow]
Electro:
Let me add that I have these videos as well … every now and then I pull them out again and watch them. I also have Frary’s latest edition of his book on scenery.
These are all great resources – Frary is definitely loaded with great techniques and I appreciate his willingness to write about them and demo them to us on video.
I’ve adapted several of his techniques for use in my own scenery work on my Siskiyou Line.
I echo the comments of Joe and everyone else. I have all of his DVD’s and find them both informative and entertaining to watch. (My 6-year old daughter loves the one on scenic detailing). I highly recommend the entire series.
I’d also like to mention a plug for Joe (he’s too modest) and recommend you take a look at his Siskiyou series as well. Tons of great hints and information at a real bargain price. His next DVD will be on scenery. I can’t wait for mine to come in!!! Check it out at…

I always try to learn from the best, and Dave Frary and Joe Fugate are most definitely among that number!
Happy Modeling! [8D]
I’m a big Joe fan. I have all of his DVD’s and I’m waiting for the scenery DVD as well. I have already tried his vermiculite mix. You can read about it here.

Yes you are absoslutely right. I also try to learn from the best. Guys like Joe is the main reason I’m in this hobby.
I also think that you belong to that club, ‘the best club’, your layout is simply amazing.
Thanks Joe for telling me that. I know that if you like the DVD’s, I will like them too.
electro…Better ask first before you put your money down on the DVDs…Your player may not play DVDs sold in USA. There is that stupid “protection” that the record companies have…It may not apply to Mr. Frary’s DVDs, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask before you order.
If you mean region codes, there is no problem because my DVD player is region free. But you are right about that, it’s stupid.
I suspect these DVDs will not be a problem – as is the case with most DVDs produced in the hobby. The region protection is something done mostly on Hollywood DVDs which are all done in large runs using glass pressed masters.
Small run DVDs (like you find in the model railroad hobby) tend to be burned DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs – which default to all regions.
I know the DVDs put out by Model-trains-video.com (the guys who distribute my Siskiyou Line series on DVD) are gang burned on a DVD duplicator, and they are “all region” (region 0) DVD+Rs. In fact, you have to really work at it to get a region-specific burned DVD. [swg]
The distribution numbers of DVDs in the hobby are generally so low that gang burning will be more economical than the glass mastering used by the Hollywood big boys. So region-specific DVDs will generally not be a concern for us modelers.
And since most of the good DVDs come from Hollywood in the USA, foreign DVD players are the most compatible DVD players in the world, playing just about anything you can buy – NTSC, PAL, region-specific, you name it.
So much for Hollywood’s attempts at controlling the market. [swg]
The only thing I need to do here in Sweden when I buy a DVD player is to tell the store, make it region free or I will not buy it. They are so happy to sell it so they will always do it without asking any questions [:D]
