I’ve purchased the DVD and have it installed on my computer. Working out of town a lot presents the opportunity to read back issues of MR. Does anyone know if it’s possible to put some of the information from the 75 year collection onto an Android tablet? Does this contravene the copyright rules?
Regards,
Jim
In a word, No.
It is encrypted and works with the reader provided. Since tablets have limited memory, it was decided to forego that route. Depending on the tablet, the archive could chew up a third to all of the memory available.
An observation:
We just bought our daughter an iPad 2. She’s studying in Italy, and finds her laptop too large and awkward. My wife has been playing with the iPad before we go over to visit Italy ourselves at the end of the week.
I’m a lifelong geek. I’ve been programming computers for almost 50 years. My wife, on the other hand, is an artist and really struggles with TV remotes. So, I was greatly surprised to see how much she loves the iPad.
These devices have a huge market potential, much larger than the “technology” pundits ever imagined. They are designed by geeks, of course, but they are not designed for geeks, and that sets them apart. Every publishing company, Kalmbach included, would do well to recognize this now and get on board before the train leaves the station.
The electronic subscription to the current MR works great on tablet devices.
Most tablets can read PDF files just fine, so there is no technical reason the 75 year collection could not be installed to a tablet - but there would have to be a methoid of installing just a select range, as the entire 75 years plus the index would fill all available storage. The reading experience would not be anything like the current digital subscription, since anything prior to electronic publication is more or less just a scan, warts and all - some of those older issues were in bad shape, they did the best with what they had but rips and tears are evident in the scans.
