Starting my first layout and the one I am using calls for Kato Unitrack. I would rather use Atlas code 100, but since I’ve never done this before I am hesitant.
I like the way real ballast looks–can you still use ballast on the all-in-one track?

Yes, you can. Just use enough to cover the plastic ballast inside the rails, and sweep off the tie surfaces with a fine hair artist’s brush. Do the same outside the rails, and down over the “shoulders” of the plastic base. If you do it right, you will see that it looks a bit high, but quite believable. Later, once you have glued it, feel free to use heavy dark-brown washes to colour the ballast inside the rails and to the outer edges of the ties. There will be some “bleeding”, but that is okay.
