Is the cause of these “wheel impacts” flat spots?
The terminolgy and the scale of condemnable impacts have escaped my, forgive me Lucius B-B, purview.
Let’s guess: to get the 90K impact on a wheel of an eight wheeled car…well if all 8 wheels were flat spotted and rolling with the flat spots synchronized that would be 360 tons of impact. Mass times acceleration…how big would the flat spots be or how fast would a 143 ton car need to be moving? But then only one wheel shattering would derail the train.
But then a 125 ton engine made it into SLO one night with 7 inch flat spots on a truck of a DL701 (GP9’s didn’t control the DB of a trailing DL701 until the GP9s were converted to potential-wire from field-loop DB control after that.)
