Canadian government says it won’t sell VIA

Selling VIA would not have worked, but I’m more concerned that the Government is planning to make service cuts, though I don’t know where they would do so. Outside of the Quebec City - Windsor corridor, train “service” is already skeletal. Cutting services in the corridor would be insane, given the hundreds of millions currently being spent to increase train capacity between Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

I’m happy to read that some senses have come to the government about VIA rail. Now, it should find funding to VIA so it can expand!

Budget time is upon us. So let`s throw the media a bone and see what happens.

If Happer said the sky was blue, I would have to check!!!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Canadian Government has cut VIA way too much as it is throughout VIA’s history. Some kind of funding mechanism should’ve been found a good 30 years ago to keep it going instead of allowing it top exist only by the whim of the Government in power at any given time.

“does not necessarily” == wiggle room

I should have checked before.

To the Victoria - Nanaimo Service VIA informs:
Temporary Bus Replacing VIA’s Victoria to Courtenay Train Service To Make Last Trip August 7, 2011

  • VIA pursues $5.5M investment in refurbishing Vancouver Island RDC cars
So there might still be a chance.

And there is no note about the Gaspe train. So it seems it is operating again.

If I saw it correctly in the last schedule, the VIA service at Vancouver Island does not exist any more. The future of the Gaspe train does not seem to be so clear either as high investments in bridges have to be done, So little (or not so little) pieces of Canadian railway traffic are falling away. I agree with Mr. Schurman about the corridor.
