So, when these units derail there will be a huge LNG explosion instead of a diesel fuel fire? Sounds like there wll be quite a trade off in weight to make the LP tank strong enough.

That’s interesting. I’m curious how well a converted diesel engine will work compared to an engine designed specifically for the fuel.
One thing for sure, LNG won’t “gel” like diesel fuel during those Canadian winters!
I’m interested to see how it is going to work. I live right by that line, so from a noise perspective i’m curious to see if there is a difference.

I guess that CN will have to reconfigure the fuel tanks on the units they might plan to use for LNG. Maybe they should also look at Biodiesel from recycled vegetable oil.
Watch this one very closely. This is a logical outgrowth of the need to get a better operating ratio. Fuel is a huge cost. For the sake of the industry, I hope it works.
LNG, like ethanol, produces less energy per volume than diesel, so there’s a trade-off in cost vs. amount of LNG needed to travel an equivalent distance to what a gallon of diesel can produce. And LNG, like ethanol, produces a lot of H20 and C02, two greenhouse gasses, though the H20 is the more significant of the two (and greater volume byproduct ).
Several years ago BN modified two SD 40-2’s for use on coal trains. They had two fuel tenders and a fueling station at Staples, MN. I am not sure if they had another fueling station. They eventually abandoned the test, and returned the units to Diesel fuel only.
