What’s ironic here is that CN could avoid using the Quebec bridge entirely and send all its traffic on a North shore line through Hervey Jct, using a currently dormant line between Hervey Jct and Deschambault. VIA would be left as the sole user of the bridge, which would probably prompt CN to discontinue service and offer it for sale.
I predict that CN would love to convert the bridge into an entire four-lane road from the existing reversible three-lane road/one rail bridge so they would never have to worry to maintain the bridge by handling it to the provincially funded Ministere des transports. This is one example that private corporations like CN are resisted to contribute any funding to infrastructure upgrading projects by funding to spoiled executive salaries/acquaintances so they go spent their earnings going around the world. This means that VIA Rail will be unable to serve Quebec City from Montreal unless they take the poorly maintained rail line on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River through Trois-Rivieres that could take up to four hours from existing two hours. Then that will be one excuse to discontinue VIA service anywhere east of Montreal to Halifax.
