I don’t like seeing them go either.
Noooooooooo! Oh, I’ll be sad to see those SD60s go.
From the lyrics of a great Faster Pussycat song “Time are changing, and move to fast, way to fast for me”. Change on the railroad is never ending, whether we like it or not.
lets hope the former soo line sd60s find some new homes
Sad to hear these are leaving. Loved to see these in Wisconsin on CP freights.
As I recall, the 60 series were such turkeys that EMD lost it’s number one seller status to GE and hasn’t came close to regaining it.
It may be that is was the SD50 that did the most damage to EMD, what with the overheating and premature engine failures. I’ve heard from more than one source who really liked the SD60, because it had the new 710 engine thus avoiding all the problems that plagued the SD50 with its 645 engine pushed within an inch of its life.

Sure, rebuild the whole fleet at CAD-Rail and then promptly put it up for sale. Sounds like a great way to waste scarce capital.
Meanwhile, derelict, fuel-hungry SD40-2’s will keep pulling whatever tonnage is left for CP to move - at a much higher operating cost, that is.
We always enjoyed seeing them passing through Michigan on the CSX when CP was still running through here several times a day. It does seem strange to overhaul then then sell them right away. Change of CEOs equal change of philosophy?
Soo Line really is dead, now. Thanks EHH!
The 60 Series were not bad engines, in fact they were great engines (except the first of the M series were ugly in front). They just fell victim to the fast changing technology as EMD (and GE) introduced the 70 (AC & DC) 80 (AC) and 90 (AC) series one right after the other. The 60 was UP’s choice for coal hauler but the 70 series AC units turned out to be so much more versatile, especially at low speeds, that the 70’s (and GE C44-9W) ran them off the coal routes rather quickly and left them to manifests. There are many roads with SD402’s who will buy these for their newer, higher horsepower capability. All 33 will be gone in short order. I wouldn’t be surprised to see NS buy them for SD59 rebuilds/conversions…
Probably Norfolk Southern might buy some and turn them to SD60Es. I hope this doesn’t happen. ![]()
Well you can still see SD60’s (sool line) running in my garden in the UK
What happened to CP 's SD90MACs? I know CP was getting rid of them, but don’t know who got them.
CP’s trash, CN’s treasure!
Ahhhh but give me some 547’s, or maybe a 4-8-4 or 2-10-4, never mind, living in the past which is right where I’d LIKE TO BE.
As long as EHH destroy’s the CP like he did the CN by pissing away customers, they won’t need much power. Other than enough to pull the 2 trains left on a route. That are operating in Hunter style 14,000 ton and 11,000ft long. Don’t forget BN fired him for a reason.
On September 29 I witnessed an eastbound train being pulled by three seemingly freshly painted Canadian Pacifc SD60’s. One of our CP mechanical services people told me a few are back in service. Guess it’s time to get photos of the SD60’s in CP colors (or colours!) while you can.
