I’m a railfan from Germany and would like to at what time the first GE 4400 AC appeared on the scene at CP. Is it likely, that GE’s would be coupled together with SD 40-2s?
The first CPR AC4400CW’s were delivered in 1995. I have seen them run with SD40-2’s but this is not common. They normally run with themselves and/or CPR’s SD90/43MAC’s and ES44AC’s.
Thanks for your answer, this will help me for a modelling project. I have a Athearn SD 40-2 (dummy) that I want to repaint and detail for CP and couple with the GE.
Remember that you can also run Soo Line SD40-2’s with that AC4400CW. I saw just such a combination in 2004 in the Thompson River canyon on a CPR westbound, so it does happen.
I have seen a GE 4400 in CP coulours coupled with an SD60 in SOO colours either in red and white or all red running through Guelph Junction a fair amount. The strangest thing was last year in the spring when they used a CP 4400, SOO SD60 and a BNSF SD40-2 for switching in Cambridge. I asked the fellow on the ground if they had enough power to get the job done. He just nodded and smiled.
Here are a couple of sites if you are interested where you can find out more info on the CP:
Here in Montreal, we see many older SD-40-2 lashed-up with big GE units. The yards are where you still can see low nose GP-9’s. Some SOO line SD’s are not uncommon.
