Besides all the Milwaukee Road bandits out there, does anybody know if Canadian Pacific still has any intention of painting a Milwaukee Road heritage unit? It was talked about being done a few years ago, but since then I have not heard a word about this. I would love to see a CP Milwaukee Road heritage locomotive[:D]
I was doing some searches tonight because I remember seeing some drawings of fake Milwaukee Road locomotives so I thought I would post the link to them. One is of a P42 and it got me thinking Maybe Amtrak could paint one up for the Milwaukee/Chicago Hiawatha service?? I love the UP heritage schemes and I would love to see Canadian Pacific add to there heritage fleet.
I used to work with the son of Art Danz. He said something to the effect that it was discussed at one point, but since the CP itself didn’t acquire MILW, the Soo did, that a Heritage type unit is unlikely.
At the rate the patches are washing off, we might have one to look at eventually.
Once in a while I get to run WSOR 4009, ex-MILW 199. Still has the weed-cutter rear plow and the bell mounted behind the cab up high.
I like the CP better than any other railroad because they don’t repaint the engines as fast as other railroads. I saw a photo of a train in Oconomowoc, WI which had a CP engine and a SOO engine–both the same number.
There are always SOO GP38-2’s and GP40’s (some ex-MILW) in Portage, WI being used as switchers in the yard. Once and a while, a see a SOO/MILW “Bandit” GP40 in the yard lash-up. It’s been a couple of months since I have seen it though (it travels around from Milwaukee, up to portage, and I saw it once in La Crosse) There are always SOO SD50’s or SD60’s in Portage as well.
It would be nice to see a few ex-MILW units get painted up in original MILW paint, and maybe a SD40-2 in the Hiawatha paint (orange/black with Hiawatha logo on nose).
I don’t like how the UP used SD70ACE’s to paint up in Heritage unit paint, because the engine does not remind me of what (to give an example) the C&NW was like. In my opinion, repaint the C&NW GE’s in C&NW paint, with the UP lettering on it. But, I am not UP…
Indeed, it would be neat to see a unit painted up in MILW colors. Unfortunately, the MP15s are (supposedly) on their way out, the GP38-2s are almost all painted in SOO/CP paint (except 4512, which still retains its short fuel tank…), the GP40s are probably pretty well worn out, and the SD40-2s are GONE! Also the SD10s, which were supposedly MILW heritage candidates…
Probably a better possibility would be the upcoming commuter operations in southeastern Wisconsin. Orange and black, or orange and black with maroon, would look awesome on a commuter train! Would probably be more expensive than standard stainless steel a la Metra, though…
Maybe CP should pull a UP and paint up an SD70ACE in Milwaukee colors?
I’ve a friend in the Milwaukee Road Historical Society who said that the organization has been pestering CP rail for a couple of years trying to get a Milw GP40 from them. No such luck.
You could always bug DME to try and get back some of the SD40-2’s from them - maybe if the PRB goes through they will donate one? (I realize this is a little detached from reality…)
[bow]I really like the idea of a MILW heritage Amtrak P42 unit on the Hiawatha line. This would make perfect sense as these trains (Chicago to Milwaukee) run exclusively on ex-MILW rail and would really honor both the old road and it’s employees (some of who still work on these rails) very well. I especailly like the third unit paint scheme you show (the one without the large stripe on the side of hte unit), it reminds me of the GP40-2’ s (300 series) coming new to Wausau, WI with a very similar paint scheme when I lived there in the mid-1970’s and thought they were the coolest units on rails at the time (well, yes, I was rather new to railfanning and did not know what else was out there to be seen). [:)]
At least 1 MotivePower Passenger Locomotive in a Hiawatha Steam Locomotive paint scheme is the way to honor the Milwaukee Road. Metra and Canadian Pacific could get together on the project.
