Hmmm, with BNSF putting some CF7’s up for sale it’s hard to see how FP9’s could be better suited to freight work, but I guess that’s why I don’t work in railroading.
I seriously doubt that the BNSF is putting up “some CF7s” for sale as its predicessor railroad, the Santa Fe, sold it’s entire fleet of CF-7s to shortline RRs, Amtrak & loco dealers back in the early to-mid 1980s.
I’ve never seen a picture or seen a news item about “BNSF” CF-7s on their roster. BNSF did pick up two (or three?) ex “Washington Central” CF-7s with its purchase of this carrier in 1996, but I think these units are long gone from the roster.
There was a recent news item about old GP-35s (ex AT&SF) being put up for sale by BNSF recently?
I recall CN used to assign cab units to their snowplow extras. Maybe the OSR thinks having the walkways protected inside the car body would be nice during blizzards.
My guess is, though, the general manager just has soft spot for vintage diesels.

BNSF got CF7’s the merger of the ATSF, which owned a terminal road in Los Angles. The line was called the Los Angles Junction railway. They had 4 left, which were replaced recently with genseys.

I rode behind the WSJR 6508 when it was on the tourist railroad. Now I can hardly wait for her to come through town on a freight. I hope the Ontario Southland paints her up in the old Toronto, Hamilton, and Buffalo, paint scheme it is using on the other engines.
