Canadian snow shortage?

I hear Canada is having a snow shortage, and David Letterman suggested that Americans ship snow cleared out in the eastern US to Canada. First I thought of semi-trucks, but nah. Snow should be shipped by rail to Canada in mech or cryo reefers:) If ARMN, WFE, or any of the other shippers have cars to spare that is:)

I met a couple in my restaurant last night who live about 100 miles north of Toronto…So after me accusing them of shipping all their snow to us and a few laughs…they said we here in Pa. can KEEP IT! I think we should ship it back. [;)]

Ya I’ve been watching the Olympics, and Vancouver is like 40* and the snow is melting.

I agree, the northeast has been hammered this winter.

It’s been pretty mild in Denver, except for alot of snow storms we had back in Oct.

Ship it by rail I say!

Well, my I contribute to this venue?

Normally, the region of Northern Germany where I live, is not blessed with that white stuff, as temps are usually in the low 40´s, but this year, we “enjoy” the second consecutive month with a layer of 2´ of snow and temps around freezing or even down to 10 F.

Another message from the “Great White North” - we’ve been enjoying a great winter where I live in the east, very little snow. We had a decent storm about a month ago, but it rained a few days later and removed much of it. The white stuff is still mostly where it was piled, but the streets and most open areas are bare! Love it! We did have a “storm” overnight - about half an inch. Supposed to rain later on today. It’s just above freezing here at 7:30am, will go to 37F or more later. Love this “global warming” as my snowblower can sit unused in the garage!

Here in Northern Ontario we only have less than half the snow we usually get. There have been several weeks in a row with no snow fall. Then we would get a light dusting for a day then back to sunny weather for a few more weeks. My snow blower has only been used a few times and even then I could have used a shovel. I am not complaining though as it has been a very nice winter for a change.

Back in 1977 when the blizzard of '77 hit Buffalo (forever cementing Buffalo’s fate) the rail yards were paralized with snow. To get it out of the way, snow trains were sent south with loaded gons and hoppers to let it melt away. An interesting fact from that blizzard from a report I read some years back…is that only 12-14" of new snow fell durring that blizzard. Hardly an event in western Ny. The rest of the snow was from a deep powdery snow cover on lake Erie that blew in when the front moved thru. I have a picture in a book that showes the snow drifted as high as the roof of a caboose where one could only see the cupola sticking out.

The “Northeast” does not include Washington, DC. Please! We completely disavow that place, and all it stands for over the last few years.

As a skier, I’m very annoyed that our government has chosen to keep all the snow for themselves, while those of us in the “real” Northeast, that is, Red Sox Nation, are left with hardly any.

HAH!!!

At least you see SUN!!

All we see down here in London ON are a few dribble bits of snowflurries and DULL DULL DULL for WEEKS on end![:(]

OK. Well. We saw sun for 5 minutes a few days ago but that was it. Just to the west of us there was a day that featured all day sun—all we got was another dull day.[:-^]

Actually most of us south and west of the Hudson River and north and east of Potomac River would prefer not to be refered to as the “Northeast”. We are, as we have been for some 400 years, the Mid Atlantic, even if the major media failed US Geography.

Here in northeastern Maryland, we had about 24-30 inches twice in 5 days. 24-30 inches is not that uncommon here, it has happened about once every 5 years in my 53 years living here. But two of these back to back, that is a record breaker.

Maryland is known for “varable” weather, some winters very mild, others very cold. This one has been cold and snowy, some 70" total this season.

Last year it was only about 8" total.

But in two weeks the sun will come out, then it will rain, then it will be all gone - no big deal, at least not for me. I’m self employed and make my own hours - including staying put in the storms.

Hi

Speaking of Diesel powered transportation. [:-^] I wonder how the “Ice Road Truckers” are doing if Canada is short on snow and cold air?
Hows that for a transition? [(-D]

Have a good day

This is an El Nino winter. All the big storms seen to come across the middle of the country, and go out to sea off Long Island, NY and Cape Cod, MA. On the coast of Maine, most of the snow has melted and temperatures have been in the 40s recently. As Mr B said, the skiiers in the mountains are upset; it has been too warm to run snow making and when it snows, the storm often ends up as rain which washes away any good skiing snow.

The Ice Road guys are in far north Alberta and NW Territories, Canada; they still have more cold weather than Vancouver area

I don’t think some of you guys realize just how big Canada is, lol. As for the Ice Road Truckers, don’t worry, they will be ok up there in Northern Canada. Here in Southern Ontario I’ve fired up my snowblower three times this year. Not to blow snow but just to keep the battery charged up. I haven’t had to clean up any snow. Over Christmas a bunch of us drove 3 hours north east of where I live just to to a little snowmobiling. This winter has really sucked if your a fan of the white stuff.

This is very true. People watch the Olympics and see that Vancouver is warm and rainy (which really isn’t all THAT unusual for Vancouver), and then think “Well, Canada sure is having a warm and snowless winter”. That’s like me looking at the snowfall in the Northeastern US, then going up to a Texan and saying “Boy, you’ve sure had a lot of snow this winter.”

Yes, the winter hasn’t been the best everywhere, but it’s hard to say. In Southeastern Ontario, our outdoor rinks have been having an exceptional year because of how cold it has stayed, and while having less snow than usual, it’s still been there. Out in Nova Scotia, where I am right now, it all depends where you are. My area just got hit by a nasty blizzard which dropped almost 2 feet of snow overnight…other areas got an inch or two.

That was not meant to be an attempt to take the humour out of this thread, but I always get at least a little bit irked when people start making the generalizations that so many seem to enjoy doing…

I have a fair idea how big Canada. I spent a year in Fairbanks Ak. at 7000’ ASL. We got some snow there also. A couple years ago we flew back to AK. across western Canada, I remember how long it took in a commercial jet.
Enjoy your snow mobiling.

Lee

That sums it up in many cases I’m sure.

Not only is Canada big, but in the middle it is cold and snowy too.

Since most of southern Ontario is south of Boston that area makes a poor example of what the weather in Canada is like.

Because Vancouver is very coastal and fairly close to the US/Canada line, it too is a bad example of Canadian weather.

Trust me. No shortage of snow on the prairies, but it has been a mild winter, IMO.

It’s all my wife’s fault Canada didn’t get any snow this season!!!

She finally relented & let me buy a snowblower this year!

Mr B is right, Washington DC is not the Northeast (and on other things too).

Central Vermont is deficit of snow, good thing many ski areas have snow making or they would really be hurting. XC sking is very limited. Both ends of the state have received more snow than we have here in the middle. Wonder if it is because I got the snowblower (6’) out for the first time in a couple of years and hitched it onto the tractor early in the season?

Problem with no snow on the ground is that it is hard on crops being exposed to the elements all winter. Also, ground water tables suffer if there is no runoff into the ground come spring. Heating bills climb too as there is no insulation around the foundations.

I certainly don’t mind driving on dirt roads instead of ribbons of ice all winter, but we do need some on the ground. If we could only figure out a way to keep it off the roads when it fell.

Mr B, can I bring my Red Sox train down and run it on your layout?

Have fun,

They can have all 35" of snow in my area, and more next wednesday! Jeez Im gonna have shovel the football field at my HS with my lacrosse teammates at this rate. Tommy From the arctic (Maryland)

This was my backyard last weekend and this coming weekend we’ll be in the 60’s, here in central Georgia.

Go figger!

The best thing about snow around here is it only last for a day or so, although this year we’ve been much colder and wetter on average than normal. I’ll be glad when spring comes.
