Since the train hasn’t operated for a month in the “mandatory service” area between Capreol and Winnipeg, that’s pretty convincing evidence that the “service” (such that it is, even when running) is not “mandatory.”

…Oh say can you see…

In the not to distance future can you see The CANADIAN being operated between Winnipeg and Vancouver only - scenery between Winnipeg & Toronto is much the same as in Western Canada plus from Winnipeg you have Prairie, rolling country, prairie again then rolling country & then approach to mountains
Return of the " rail-liners" between Winnipeg & Toronto if necessary - daytime operations between larger centers such as Toronto to Sudbury etc etc

Earl, I feel it is more likely that the train is rerouted between Toronto and Winnipeg via the CP route along Lake Superior. VIA has been considering this for a while now, and the two Gogoma wrecks only pushed the issue along further.

Unrelated, but that black stripe is ugly. They should have just left it blue to match the others. Why couldn’t they put a special logo next to the door like they do with VIA1?

Of course, they could have bussed passengers to Grand Forks and put them on Amtrak, but I guess that’s too much effort for the big brains at VIA.

@Bill Thoms: Not too many people travelling across Canada carry their passports with them.

Oh, come on Bill, just so happens that busing to Grand Forks Amtrak would not work because Amtrak does not go to where where the Canadian goes–Toronto and other points east of WPG. I like the CP route idea, however.

Hooray !!! Caused my holiday some grief.

I`m surprised with very little complaints from long distance travelers about the suspended Canadian service east of Winnipeg since early March. It seems now the marketing demand to travel the famous Canadian has declined substantially in the last ten years that the fear is if Prime Minister Harper gets re-elected next fall then he would consider to scrap the entire service altogether. It seems one option is for the Rocky Mountaineer to purchase The Canadian from the federal government. If that does happen then The Canadian will have to be scaled down to once a week service from each city (Vancouver and Toronto) and as a seasonal operation (early April to early November) to survive financially.
