I have recently aquired a lionel train set . I was told that it is probably late 50’s early 60’s. I am having trouble locating any information on the engine. It is metal (black) with a red stripe down both sides and has the #249 on each side. It also came with a Coal Car with Red stripe and Pennsylvania written on each side in white letters.If anyone can tell me anything about this engine I would appreciate it.

I can give you a little bit of help. The engine (a 2-4-2) that you have was made in 1958 and has a value of $20.00 in good shape to $50.00 in excellent shape (which would include a perfect box). There should be a number on the side of the cars. If you provide them, then we can give you a price on them also.

A (2 - 4 - 2) means there is 2 small wheels in front, then 4 large wheels, and 2 small wheels in back. The 249 series was first made in 1958. Do you have just the locomotive and tender or are there additional cars?

If the 249 loco came in a Lionel set, it was the 1590 set, which included:
249 2-4-2 steam locomotive
250T tender
6014 Bosco box car (red)
6151 flatcar with Range Patrol truck (this one is rare)
6112 gondola with cannisters
6017 Lionel Lines caboose
The 249 was also used for a lot of uncataloged sets, so if the numbers of any other cars are different, we can start speculating - Sears? Western Auto?[:)]
I have engine#249. I have that engine as well as the tender car which doensn’t appear to have a number, however (Pennsylvania) is written on both sides. box car #6014 one small chip in wheel,2 flat rail cars# 6801 and #6818 , Caboose # 6017 As well as 8 pieces curved track and 7 pieces of straight track, And a type 2240 transformer. If you could help me determine a rough value of the said items I would appreciate it.
You appear to have an uncatalog set; such sets don’t come up often enough to generate a market price. The latest Greenberg’s price guide I have is from way back in 2000, but here goes:
249 Locomotive with tender - $20 (good), $45 (exc)
6014 Boxcar - $4/$7
6801 Flatcar - $45/$100, BUT, you have to have the boat load.
6818 Flatcar - $23/$50. BUT you have to have the transformer load
6017 Caboose - $2/$6
The flatcars without loads are worth about the same as the caboose.
The track might be worth a dollar (total).
I can’t find a Lionel 2240 transformer (the Lionel 2240 was a 1956 Wabash F-3 AB diesel locomotive pair). Look for a four-digit number beginning with “10”.

Nostalgia sells! However, you just won’t get much for your old nostalgic sets.

I paid 125 euro’s for a not working 2037 a good unloaded gondola, a tankcar with one coupler misseng an a shattered caboose. Guess everyone is laughing now…
you see, if you don’t have much choice, prices are high… and I got the engine working and the wistle tender worked too, so never mind the money, I’m happy with it…
