What is you favorite way to create the look of a large forest without a lot of work (or $$$)? Polyfiber? Lichen? I am planning on using Woodland Scenics tree kits for the ‘detailed’ trees at the front of the forest and as stand alone trees out on the layout. Now I need something behind them that will fill in about four square feet of mountain.
I prefer individual trees and a forest floor covering of some sort.
Now to get the carpet covering you see on the eastern mountians anything you can paint a variety of shades of green (Or whatever seasonal colors) should work. My LHS used old Furnace filters and lumps of fuzz with a indetermined origin. It worked on his mountain but not in my home because of airway problems.
I like polyfiber balls covered with ground foam:

WOW! That is fantastic. Just What I need for the hills of Southern Connecticut along the New Haven. What are Poly Fiber Balls and where do you get them?
Thanks,
Poly Fiber is a material used to fill pillows and stuffed animals. You can buy white Poly Fiber Fill at craft stores or Walmart, but you’ll need to paint it black or dark green. Woodland Scenics sells it already dyed dark green, but it costs more.
Once you have the poly fiber use need to tear off pieces and tease and roll them into balls, I use balls about an inch across. After that, coat the balls with your favorite adhesive, I like mega hold hair spray. Drop them in a bag with coarse ground foam, and shake. Then, remove for the bag, and place on some newspaper to dry. I like to give them an extra shot of hair spray when I take them out of the bag.
When the balls are dry, coat the hill with full strength white glue, and stick the balls on.
For the ridge shown above, I used WS Dark Green, Medium Green, Light Green, and Burnt Grass ground foam. With the Dark and Medium green trees predominate.
