I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the ex-DEVCO (now Sydney
Coal Railway) coal cars that are used to move coal between Sydney and
the Lingan power station in Cape Breton, and which also are frequently
hauled by the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway through
towards Truro (the bright green ones whith yellow ends). Does anyone
know the specifications of these cars?
For any of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, see this picture:
As you might expect (with this being a model railroading forum), I’m
looking to put together a fleet of these cars in HO scale. So my first
question is, are there any models of these cars or anything like them in
HO scale? Since I don’t know what they are properly called, it’s hard to
see if models exist. I’ve been looking through various coal hoppers and
gondolas, but haven’t found a match yet. Could anyone suggest a decent
starting point, or a close stand-in, if the cars haven’t been made?
What you want to do is talk to the website owner, his name is Willie (or “bentnosewillie” as he’s know on the web). He’s a big CB&CNS modeler (one of the few I know of). Look at his website, and find his e-mail address at the bottom. BW is a good guy, and he might be able to help you.
I’m modelling the '30s, so am not that familiar with more modern rolling stock. However, looking at the cars in your links, they appear similar to the Ortner 5-bay rapid discharge cars. Athearn or MDC offers or offered an HO scale version, which may be seen HERE. Scroll down a bit for the 5-bay version.
Thanks Paul, I’ve sent him an e-mail and I hope he might be of help. (if not, I’m sure he’s a good contact to have for other CB&CNS projects!)
And thanks Wayne…I actually had someone on another forum make that same suggestion, and I can see the similarity. Starting with those 5-bay rapid discharge cars I could remove the upper extended part of the ends, and with some fairly simple detailing and modification, the car would be a pretty close match. Now, I just have to actually find some of those cars
