carbondale central

in the mid eighties there was a project layout the was called the carbondale central that i always liked. does anyone still have the track plan and if so how can i get it?

Interesting, it’s not in the track plan database, at least not with ‘carbondale’ in the keywords. The back issues of MR with the project in it might still be available, but I don;t rememebr exactly which issues they were - I do have them in my collection somewhere.

the track plan data base doesn’t go back that far. it was in “6 model railroads you build” but i cant find that either. I was hoping to find someone who has the back issues or the book that might be willing to scan the series and e mail it to me.

The Malcom Furlow articles on the Carbondale Central were reprinted in the Kalmbach book 6 HO Railroads You Can Build

You can also purchase out-of-print books and magazines from Railpub.

IMHO, the Carbondale Central was more of a scenery exercise than an engaging operating model railroad, which is great if that is your preference.

Carbondale Central was in the January, February, and March 1988 issues of MR.

it was the scenery part i always liked. as i remeber the track plan was a basic flat folded figure eight but the scenery was amazing two level city scape. does the city scenery book cover this type of scenery?

Mmmm - there was a retired army major (John Fultz) who had an H0 scale layout (Central City & River Route) strongly inspired by the Carbondale layout - you can find pictures of John’s layout in Great Model Railroads 2004.

hi,

a shelf approach, rather recently in MR.

no run-around, rather realistic switching and great two-level scenery.

Carbondale Central was a 3-part MRR series beginning in January 1988 by Malcom Furlow. Check out Google Books HERE and the Sandy Harbor (including benchwork & trackplan) that was inspired by the Carbondale Central.
